Week 4: Priced about the same as Porsche Macan, our 2018 Audi Q5 45 TFSI long-term tester is not exactly cheap. So, should you have it over the Porka?
A month in and our 2018 Q5 45 TFSI continues to impress with its everyday usability, however, this week we need to tackle the big one – its price.
Weighing in at AED192,500 base, it is by no means a cheap car. In fact, almost the same amount of your dirhams will get you a spiffing 2018 Porsche Macan. And well, you’ll have a Porsche. So, should you?
When it comes to power both cars are propelled by a four-cylinder turbocharged engine making an identical 252 horsepower. However, the Macan is longer at 4,697mm compared to the Q5’s 4,630mm, so the former is more spacious, therefore a smidgen more practical.
When it comes to performance, the Audi surprisingly trumps the Porsche. Zero to 100km/h is dealt with in 6.3 seconds in the Q5, while the Macan despatches the same run nearly half a second slower in 6.7 seconds.
But here’s the nub. Our long-term Q5 45 TFSI does not actually cost AED192K as I mentioned earlier. With its ten optional extras, our tester waltzes in at hefty AED241,300. That’s a lot of money for a compact crossover. It is worth mentioning though, that priced spec-for-spec, the Macan would easily surpass that number. And by some margin.
In the corners the Porsche is decidedly better though, not that it’d matter to the average crossover buyer, I suspect. Dynamically, the Q5 drives like a borderline fat hot hatch as well, which is no bad thing, while the ride quality is nicer than the Macan’s. Overall, if you have the money, the Q5 is a decent premium family crossover. It’s still no Porsche, though.
