The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty truck has just been unveiled and it’s not shy, that’s for sure – the massive pick-up truck will come with massive towing power and the option of more than 1,200Nm of torque, so you know, you’re gonna need a bigger boat
Everybody knows where the money is, which is why GM is turning its back to saloons across the Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac brands, because high-profit SUVs and trucks is where it’s at. The shift in focus will affect five manufacturing plants and thousands of workers, meanwhile all’s rosy on the other end of the product portfolio.
GM’s pickup trucks are doing just fine, and Chevrolet is about to reveal the third all-new Silverado in 18 months giving us a test for now before the official launch in February. The company promises the most capable and advanced Silverado Heavy Duty ever, because what else would they say.
When it goes on sale as a 2020 model the new Silverado HD won’t be mistaken for anything else with an enormous grille and chrome bar wearing a huge Chevrolet label. The rest of it is completely new too, and only the roof is shared with the Silverado 1500. Compared to the current truck the 2020 Silverado HD also has a little more legroom and an improved seating position, but so far GM’s just teasing.
The truck in the pictures is kitted out in high-spec Z71 trim so it sits on beefy Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tyres and off-road minded suspension. Because of its size and workload intentions, the 2020 Silverado HD will also come with the option of new engines, either a turbodiesel V8 pumping out more than 1,200Nm of torque. That monster will come mated to a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission, otherwise the petrol version is likely to be a 6.6-litre V8 expected to deliver 400 horsepower and 450Nm of torque or thereabouts.
