MG motor is launching the new 2019 MG6 saloon in the UAE next month with prices low enough to catch your interest
I remember the first MG Motor model I drove (well, I don’t actually remember the exact model, but unfortunately I remember the experience) and it was about eight years ago now, and I can still smell the glue.
The rest of it was dire, too, but the point is that in a little over a single vehicular generation MG Motor has got its act together, ready to launch the new MG6 saloon in the UAE with sales starting next month and prices expected in the range of AED60,000.
Related to the Chinese Roewe i6 that made its debut last year, the MG6 could stand up to any other compact out there in terms of looks, even if the designers call the grille ‘Star Rider’ and the headlamps are supposed to look like the London Eye. The rest of it is kind of hanging in there – MG highlights the twin exhaust pipes, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a two-tone black-over-red interior.
The Chinese also claim the MG6 offers the most interior room in the segment, which includes rivals from Toyota, Nissan, and Renault. For the rest of it they’re taking a cue from the Koreans by loading the MG6 full of kit: it’s got an eight-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and push start, rear parking camera, dual zone air conditioning (with the all-important rear passenger vents), and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine which produces 169 horsepower and 250Nm of torque, highly respectable figures in this class. This is good for a sprint time from zero to 100km/h of just over seven seconds with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic ‘box driving the front wheels. You even get paddle shifts to play with.
At this price point you can’t expect much, but judging by this effort the new MG6 won’t singe your nose hairs.
