The new 2019 Audi SQ2 is a lifted crossover with a lowered suspension…

So they took a Volkswagen Golf R, and then they lifted it, and then they lowered it – and voilà, it’s the new 2019 Audi SQ2 sports crossover, the perfect car for aboulomaniacs…

It’s nice when you have means – as part of the Volkswagen Group, Audi can use the MQB platform whenever it pleases, which is exactly what the Q2 crossover is, a Golf, which is what nearly everything is if you fall within Wolfsburg’s watch. Skodas, Seats, Teramonts, Audi TTs… They’re all just Golfs. Of course, not all Golfs are created equal.

Take, for example, the new 2019 Audi SQ2. It’s the sporty Q2 as the S denotes, and with 300 horsepower and 400Nm of torque it doesn’t half sound bad. Mind you, what it does sound like, is a Volkswagen Golf R, so what we have here is a Golf that Audi has poshed up and lifted to make it a Q2 crossover, and then lowered back down to the ground to make it an SQ2. Welcome to Ingolstadt – where logic goes to die.

The Audi SQ2 will be making its public premiere at the Paris motor show coming up in a couple of weeks, with some pretty boastful figures – the Germans say it’ll do zero to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and top out at a limited 250km/h. That makes it only two-tenths of a second slower to 100km/h than that Golf R. Since it packs a relatively light 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, Audi says the SQ2 also handles quite admirably since the kerb figure is kept low.

As for that lowered suspension, it drops the car by 20mm compared to the standard Q2, and it’s available on optional 19-inch wheels, with 340mm brake discs up front and 210mm rears.

The rest of it is positively Audi, so lots of equipment and safety gadgets including up to 14 speakers courtesy of Bang & Olufsen, and LEDs everywhere.

However, Audi Middle East have confirmed that the new 2019 Audi SQ2 is not coming to the UAE. If it were though, we would’ve expected it to cost as much as AED200,000 since a regular ‘full-options’ Q2 can be specced up to nearly AED170,000.
