Months after revealing a 70th birthday present to itself in the form of a concept car, the Zuffenhausen manufacturer has decided to put the 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster into production as a limited
Porsche has a habit of turning ideas into reality, and what was a concept car mere months ago has already been green-lit as an exclusive production car. Zuffenhausen will build just 1,948 examples of the new limited-edition 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster, to commemorate the original Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ that rolled out of Ferdinand’s workshop 70 years ago. Oh, and also, to make that dough. Considering a dressed up non-road-legal 911 GT2 RS goes for AED2.99 million, you probably shouldn’t expect to get the new 911 Speedster on the cheap.
The first of such production examples of this insta-classic will be presented later this week at the Paris motor show, all decked out in Guards Red paintwork and exclusively designed 21-inch cross-spoke wheels. The main bit that makes the Speedster a Speedster, is the chopped windscreen and that rear engine cover panel which is made entirely out of carbon fibre and shaped with two cowls as headrests/rollbars. To ensure you can take the car out on rainy days, the 911 Speedster also comes with a lightweight tonneau cover which you button up, otherwise there’s no convertible roof to speak of.
Although it’s based on the wider 911 Carrera 4, a bunch of panels like the fenders and front lid are made of carbon fibre, and underneath, it’s actually a 911 GT3. What’s more, it’s a six-speed manual-transmission GT3, with a titanium exhaust system, and over 500 horsepower from a flat-six that revs to 9,000rpm.
With this 911 Speedster, Porsche is beginning a new line of ‘’Heritage’ cars, which will be offered as trim packages on existing models fitted by the company’s bespoke department, Porsche Exclusive. As we understand it, the Heritage Design Package expands the company’s accessories catalogue and will offer customers a wider degree of personalisation with future Porsches.
Considering its limited status, we expect the Germans to place a hefty price on the Porsche 911 Speedster, a much higher price than they’re asking for the 911 GT3 which starts from AED566,500.
