There is absolutely nothing sporty about this 2019 Cadillac Escalade Sport

If you’re tired of sports utility vehicles that aren’t sporty, here’s another sports utility vehicle that isn’t sporty at all – the new 2019 Cadillac Escalade Sport has just been launched in the UAE

The word ‘sport’ doesn’t normally come to mind when you mention the Cadillac Escalade. A much more likely association might be visions of Victorian bridges and Roman pillars. The Escalade is one of the last vestiges of ladder-frame trucks, you know, those things you used to drive before they started calling them sports utility vehicles.

Fair enough, the Escalade isn’t that old, but in a segment crammed with Range Rovers and BMWs, the ol’ Caddy stands out as a bit of a veteran. Which is precisely why so many people love the things and can’t stop buying them. Last year GM sold some 1.3 million SUVs and crossovers in the US alone, and GM says the Escalade owned its segment in terms of market share.

Motormouth has already reported that Cadillac sells fewer four-door saloons in the US these days, so being that saloons are becoming a niche it’s not hard to understand why Cadillac is pushing SUVs. In the UAE, Cadillac recently launched the XT5, which we’ve already reviewed, and now the XT4 too has arrived with a starting price of AED145,000.

Although the brand also made headlines at the Detroit motor show for yet more SUVs, the upcoming XT6 and the brand’s first ever all-electric vehicles, Cadillac hasn’t forgotten what puts money on the table. Which finally gets us to the new 2019 Cadillac Escalade Sport that has just been released in the UAE and is available to order now before deliveries begin this summer.

The new Escalade Sport is obviously about as sporty as curling, but don’t let the name fool you – it’s basically the top-spec model, with a gloss black treatment added to the grille, window trim, body side mouldings and a special finish to the standard 22-inch wheels. We’re sure the wheels do, ahem, wonders for the ride quality, but at least adaptive suspension is included, as is a park assist system, and a sound system with 16 speakers.

The engine is the Escalade’s regular 6.2-litre V8 rated at 420 horsepower and driving all four wheels. Again, that does sound rather sporty but still, try not to get too cocky in the corners with that ladder-frame under you.

We’ve reached out to GM Middle East for the price of the Escalade Sport and we’ll update you as soon as we have more information – otherwise the Escalade range starts from AED324,500.
