The new Porsche Cayenne Coupe is reaching the UAE this summer, but you’ll have to pay about 10 percent extra if you favour style over substance
Even brands that have never been in on the act have been forced to accelerate their product planning and catch up with this SUV mania, so that nowadays you can actually get a performance SUV from Skoda, or Seat, and lately, Hyundai as well.
The SUV occupation is so influential it has spawned entirely new segments of automobile, such as the convertible crossover, and the coupe crossover. In the latter’s case, although coupe crossovers make very little sense on paper since they rob you of passenger space and cargo room, and then make you pay extra for the privilege, they are a hot ticket to sales success.
Of course we are all too ready to eschew such trivialities as space, because coupe crossovers are supposed to make you look stylish, and impressing complete strangers is the only concept we care to spend money on. So here’s the predictable Porsche Cayenne Coupe, which has been on the cards for a while as the Zuffenhausen manufacturer looks to expand its best-selling portfolios.
Porsche of course sells mostly SUVs these days, with the Macan and Cayenne line taking up the bulk of annual production – last year the company made nearly 270,000 vehicles, of which over 170,000 were crossovers.
Striking while it’s hot, the new Cayenne Coupe isn’t trying anything too fancy because it looks just like a regular Cayenne with a slightly less practical roofline. If you’re good, you might spot the flatter windscreen and 20mm lowered roof, and the accentuated width since it’s 18mm bigger than the normal Cayenne.
As an option – and there will be plenty of those – you can have a carbon roof, or stick with a massive panoramic glass roof as standard. Otherwise further goodies include available 22-inch wheels and Alcantara trim, as well as the best bit which is a classic checkered fabric for the seats. The pattern is nearly identical to the classic ‘Pepita’ design that’s found inside old 911s.
The new Porsche Cayenne Coupe is already available to order from around AED350,000 for the base model powered by a 3.0-litre V6, rated at 340 horsepower and 450Nm of torque – it’ll do zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds with the right options. This is a match with the regular Cayenne, but you’ll have to pay roughly 10 percent more for the Coupe. What’s more, we fiddled with the online configurator for just a few minutes and already managed to pile on AED200,000 worth of extras.
As for the headliner, the top-spec car available at launch is the Cayenne Turbo Coupe which starts from AED610,000 and that one will top out at 286km/h point zero to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds thanks to 770Nm of torque and 550 horsepower from the twin-turbocharged V8. First deliveries will commence this summer.
