This whole super-SUV thing isn’t going away, is it? Now even the new Volkswagen Touareg R serves up 460 horsepower and 700Nm of torque… And a price tag to match, we presume
In Germany you can buy a $100,000 Touareg. So much for the people’s car. It’s a massive V8 diesel thing at that price, but since things were nowhere near ridiculous enough Wolfsburg has just revealed the new Volkswagen Touareg R, a super-SUV that just might be super enough to bother those southerners in Stuttgart and Munich during the urban crawl.
This new Volkswagen, even at this level, is still a cut-price Audi/Porsche/Bentley with a driving experience to go with the cost, but the Touareg has never been more serious than in this latest R spec. Featuring hybrid power with a turbocharged V6 petrol engine worth 340 horsepower the car also banks on batteries to provide an additional 120 horsepower or so for a total of 460. Maximum torque is 700Nm, and up to 80 percent of that can go to the rear wheels alone. An eight-speed automatic transmission drives all four wheels, although the Germans won’t divulge how quickly this Touareg R accelerates from zero to 100km/h.
In zero-emissions E-mode the Touareg R can motor along on electricity alone, but when you pump up the juice it’ll go on to a regulated 250km/h top speed. Without firing up the internal-combustion the batteries can power the car at speeds of up to 140km/h and since it’s a plug-in hybrid you can charge it with a conventional wall plug. On the move, the new VW Touareg R features the usual brake energy recuperation, different driving modes including Sport, and a 15-inch infotainment screen exclusive to the hybrid mode with specific information accessible by the driver.
Volkswagen says the Touareg R is also the first plug-in hybrid model with trailer assist, able to tow up to 3.5 tonnes and offering optional Trailer Assist to help manoeuvring into spaces “almost automatically” according to the manufacturer.
Since it’s an R car, the hot Touareg stands out from the rest of the range with R-style bumpers, body-coloured details and black exterior trim, plus available 22-inch wheels if you don’t care about things like ride comfort otherwise there are options for 20 and 21-inch designs available.
Inside the new Touareg R the SUV is loaded with kit, although if you pay even more you can have a 720-watt audio system, night vision, and Travel Assist for the first time in a Touareg, which is basically smart cruise that can semi-autonomously drive the vehicle at highway speeds.
Exclusive to the model, the Touareg R also premieres a new Lapiz Blue Metallic body colour and Puglia leather interior, which Volkswagen points out has been naturally tanned using olive oil. There’s also diamond stitching and contrasting piping inside, with R logos finishing things off on the head rests. That doesn’t sound expensive at all…
