MG Motor has launched the new zero-emissions MG ZS EV crossover in the UAE with prices starting from under AED100,000
You may have noticed a load of new arrivals on the local crossover scene – last year MG Motor sold nearly 16,000 cars in the Middle East which perhaps doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a pretty big deal when you consider the brand’s growth. Year-on-year sales increased by 130 percent and MG isn’t relenting – now they’ve just released the UAE’s cheapest zero-emissions crossover, the new MG ZS EV, which starts from AED99,500.
MG’s first ever electric car looks conservative enough since it’s based on the regular petrol-powered MG ZS, but instead of a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine when you pop the bonnet you’ll see an electric powerplant developing 148 horsepower. Then there’s also more than double the torque you get in the standard ZS, since the EV model produces 350Nm of torque as opposed to the petrol model’s 150Nm. This means the MG ZS EV can accelerate from rest to 100km/h in 8.2 seconds, with a single electric motor keeping things simple and driving the front wheels. The company says you can get up to 335km of range on a single charge which is good enough for a Dubai-Abu Dhabi round trip with a few miles to spare.
Using fast charging the crossover allows 80 percent of the battery to recharge in 40 minutes, while charging at home will take around seven hours. According to MG the UAE’s electric vehicle infrastructure is already well developed for commuters looking to switch over to zero-emissions motoring, and the car additionally comes with a home charging kit which is compatible with any regular home or office power outlet.
Apart from the benefit of not having to queue for petrol the MG ZS EV also makes its value-for-money case with a long equipment list, including an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, parking sensors, lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance, plus the usual bits like hill assistance, auto hold feature, tyre pressure monitoring system and six airbags. If you opt for the top-spec Lux model you also get a rear camera, panoramic sunroof and 17-inch alloys.
In the UK the MG ZS EV already found 2,000 buyers in the first two months since the vehicle’s launch, and in India 2,800 orders were booked within three weeks. It’ll be interesting to note how the UAE consumers respond to the first affordable all-electric family vehicle on the local market.
