The Germans have just revealed the updated Mercedes-Benz E-Class which includes a bit of AMG goodness from Affalterbach

They don’t hang about, do they, the Germans? Straight to the point, blank stare and all that – as soon as they revealed the updated 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class the hot version followed, the new Mercedes-AMG E 53, in both saloon and estate form.

Obviously there are a bunch of diesel and petrol models to go around, but the one we really care about is coming at you this summer straight from Affalterbach. The Mercedes-AMG E 53 features a restyled front end with an AMG-specific grille and flat LED headlamps. The rear view is highlighted by two-piece tail lights and a new diffuser insert. All the fake vents and intakes you want are also present and accounted for.

Under the bonnet you’ll still get a 3.0-litre straight-six engine, but the neat trick here in the E 53 is the gas turbocharger working together with an electric compressor to take power to 435bhp and torque to 520Nm. A bit more electrification provides an additional 20 or so horsepower as well as 250Nm of torque making this a proper AMG in terms of performance – with a nine-speed ‘box the E 53 does zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 270km/h if you ask nicely for the limiter to be derestricted.

Additionally with the optional AMG Driver’s Package you’ll get a better braking system which includes 370mm discs up front and 360mm rears. As has become the norm drive is sent to all four wheels, with adaptive suspension and multiple drive modes catering to all skill levels and environments.

Inside the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 the designers went with a new steering wheel with split spokes for the multifunctional controls. The wheels offered are 19-inch as standard although you can opt for 20s. Regarding the massive display split between the driver’s instruments and the infotainment system, the driver can choose between three AMG styles including Modern Classic, Sport and Supersport – the latter brings up a central rev counter, but through various menus you can also display info such as engine data, gear indicator, G-meter and AMG’s Racetimer app.
