The Koreans get bolder with every new model, and the latest 2021 Hyundai Tucson is the ultimate evolution of the brand’s latest design language.
In case you haven’t noticed, South Korea is undergoing a bit of a design revolution, incited by a bunch of Europeans. Recent hits include the remarkably distinctive Hyundai Prophecy concept and the elegant Genesis G80.
Now Hyundai is heating up the boring crossover segment with this latest fourth-generation Tucson, which looks more like a showy concept car than a conservative best-seller. Hyundai has sold seven million Tucsons since launching the model in 2004, so they can’t screw this one up. It seems the Koreans aren’t afraid to mess with the golden formula.
When it goes on sale the new 2021 Hyundai Tucson will be available with hybrid, plug-in, and 48-volt mild-hybrid options, in a variety of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive trim levels, with a six-speed automatic transmission handling up to 230 horsepower. A 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine features in every model, starting with the 136 horsepower base-engined version.
Like our own expectations, the new Tucson is bigger than ever, so it’s wider and longer compared to the outgoing model with a look developed according to Hyundai’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ styling language. The final production version looks very close to the Vision T concept first seen at last year’s LA motor show, minus the oversize wheels. There’s a lot of talk of dynamism, urban adventuring, and something called ’parametric jewels’, which is supposed to be the underlying theme of the Tucson’s design.
The interior meanwhile is inspired by waterfalls, according to the press material. We see a simple layout, dominated by a 10.25-inch touchscreen and a minimal presence of physical switchgear. Hyundai promises high-quality soft-touch materials everywhere and state-of-the-art safety and infotainment technologies.
With its 10mm longer wheelbase and increased body size, the new Tucson offers more interior space than before as well as more cargo capacity. Naturally this being Hyundai, the equipment list is plenty long too, including kit such as various driving assistance features, electronically controlled suspension, available 19-inch wheels, and mood lighting to list just a few.
