JSW Group Plans Massive Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Project in Odisha

JSW Group, led by Chairman Sajjan Jindal, has unveiled its ambitious plan to establish a state-of-the-art electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Odisha. The project aims to have the capacity to produce 1 lakh commercial electric vehicles and 3 lakh electric cars annually. In addition to vehicle production, the facility will also include a 50 GWh EV battery plant, a lithium refinery, a copper smelter, and related component manufacturing units.

Rather than relying on quotes, it can be described that JSW Group envisions an integrated facility that covers the entire electric vehicle supply chain. Key elements of this facility include a production line for e-powertrain components, a copper smelting plant, and a plant for refining 6,000 tonnes of lithium per year. By incorporating these various components, JSW Group aims to create a self-sufficient and environmentally sound manufacturing ecosystem.

To solidify its plans, JSW Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Odisha. With a proposed investment of ₹40,000 crore, the group is ready to make a significant foray into the electric vehicle industry. Construction is anticipated to commence by the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals, with a projected completion timeline of 2-3 years.

Chairman Sajjan Jindal emphasized the importance of this venture in meeting India’s renewable energy goals. He outlined three critical strategies: affordable energy storage solutions, electric vehicles priced similarly to combustion engine counterparts, and reducing dependence on the supply chain from China. By addressing these key factors, JSW Group aims to play a crucial role in India’s transition to sustainable transportation.

Apart from manufacturing, the facility will house an R&D center, allowing JSW Group to continuously innovate and enhance its electric vehicle offerings. It is worth noting that this investment in Odisha is separate from JSW Group’s joint venture with MG Motor India, a subsidiary of China’s SAIC. The company plans to operate its electric vehicle and battery manufacturing vertical through a separate entity within the parent organization.

JSW Group’s grand-scale investment in Odisha signifies its determination to contribute to India’s electric vehicle revolution. By creating a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem and focusing on affordability and sustainability, the company aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles while minimizing their environmental impact.
