The third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan SUV has been unveiled in Wolfsburg. With 76 lakh units sold since its launch in 2007, the Tiguan is one of Volkswagen’s top-selling models. The new Tiguan has been visually revamped to align with other Volkswagen SUVs and includes new technology.
The new Tiguan is based on the updated MQB ‘evo’ platform and is almost the same size as the outgoing model. It features ‘IQ Light HD’ Matrix headlights from the Touareg SUV, dual-tone alloy wheels, more pronounced haunches, and a full-width LED tail-light. The new Tiguan is also more aerodynamic, with a drag coefficient of 0.28 Cd.
Inside, the new Tiguan offers a revised Digital Cockpit layout with a 10.25-inch digital instruments display and a 15.1-inch freestanding central touchscreen. Physical buttons have replaced touch-capacitive controls on the steering wheel, and the centre console features a rotary controller with an inbuilt OLED screen. The gear lever is now positioned on the steering column.
The new Tiguan also boasts increased headroom for rear-seat passengers and expanded boot space. It comes equipped with ergoActive Plus seats, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) including autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist, and Park Assist Pro with remote parking capability.
Under the hood, the new Tiguan will be offered with various powertrains, including petrol, diesel, and petrol-hybrid options. The plug-in hybrid versions feature a larger 19.7 kWh battery, enabling a pure-electric driving range of up to 100 kilometers. Volkswagen plans to offer a Dynamic Chassis Control Pro option for the Tiguan’s adaptive suspension system.
The new Tiguan is set to go on sale worldwide in early 2024, with an expected launch in India in the second half of 2024. Prices for the new Tiguan could approach the Rs 40 lakh mark, especially if the plug-in hybrid version is introduced.
