The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has achieved a new Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car, reaching an impressive 5,573.979 meters. The 10-day challenge took the electric vehicle along the Xinjiang-Tibet route, which features desolate regions with extreme weather and road conditions.
Starting from Ayding Lake at an altitude of minus 218.845 meters, the Taycan Cross Turismo completed a journey of 2,783 kilometers, reaching the culmination point at Daban, which is 5,355.134 meters above sea level. This record-breaking journey not only demonstrated the long-distance comfort and reliability of the Porsche electric car but also showcased the charging efficiency of Porsche’s 800 V architecture in challenging conditions.
During the trip, the Taycan Cross Turismo utilized its regenerative capabilities to extend range on downhill stretches. The energy recuperation of up to 275 kW provided a significant boost to the vehicle’s range while crossing a 13,123-foot pass. The journey presented various obstacles, from surface temperatures of 70°C to frozen, icy roads, and from bustling cities to high-altitude no-man’s land. Porsche highlighted that the car experienced all four seasons within just 10 days.
Charging stations were scarce in certain areas, leading to a four-day stretch in the Kunlun and Tianshan mountains, covering a distance of 472 miles. However, thanks to Porsche’s 800 V architecture, the Taycan Cross Turismo was able to charge at the upper limit of the power output provided by the DC and AC charging points along the way, which ranged from 120 kW to 22 kW. The vehicle’s high-tech chassis with all-wheel drive and Adaptive Air Suspension effectively tackled the challenging road conditions.
This remarkable achievement by the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo sets a new standard for the capabilities of electric vehicles, showcasing their potential in conquering difficult terrains and extreme altitudes. The record-breaking journey emphasizes the adaptability and performance of Porsche’s electric car lineup.
